Internal Medicine: that’s, like, “medicine,” right?

Internal Medicine is the specialty at the crossroads of physiology, sociology, and psychology. It is the gateway to the medical sub-specialties. It’s also where patients without anywhere to go often end up. As a subintern on a general Internal Medicine service, you will be the primary clinician for patients with diverse ailments. In this role, you have only one absolute task: know your patient.

sub-I Testimonials

The Donaldson Sub-I was going really well until my attending and residents realized I was not a real med student. This created a tension that ended up being insurmountable, but we all parted on good terms. My team especially appreciated that I brought coffee (from my actual job) most days, and my patients thought I was dope af. Bygones, etc.!

Craig S. – Not a real med student

I didn’t actually make it far enough in my training to complete a sub-I (or any clinical rotations, or even the first week of school). Honestly, I feel a little bad taking a spot at a med school because I hear they are pretty hard to get into. But before I dropped out I did see this one other guy at a pizza place who was on his sub-I, and it was lik 6:30 p.m. so it can’t be that bad.

Suleiman A. – Was a med student, dropped out when he heard it was at least 4 years of school

I was thrilled to complete my Internal Medicine Sub-I at the West Haven VA on the Hospitalist Team. My attending, Dr. Chang, was one of the best clinical teachers I have ever had. I nearly pursued a career in Nephrology after being on service with him for two weeks, but then WordPress made me an offer I couldn’t refuse and I became a stock images model. Sometimes people at the agency have questions about COVID, though, and I am so grateful that I can explain the vaccines and stuff in relatable terms. Thanks, Yale!

Brittany J. – Was a Yale med student, crushed it, decided to become a WordPress stock images model after graduating

I’m a second year medical student and I’m not really sure what a Sub-I is yet. Dr. Cherry asked me to submit a testimonial because he said I have “top notch social media skills.” I don’t think he knows how to tweet.

Spend less time in front of the computer, and more time at the bedside.

(seriously, do this whenever possible)
